IRRELEVANT WEEK BENEFICIARIES

The Goodwill Fitness Center

Irrelevant Week has been doing a lot of nice things for a lot of “someones” for a lot of reasons.  The event has raised more than $1 million to local Orange County charities in its 35-year history. More than two dozen groups have benefitted.

This year, the focus is on the Goodwill Fitness Center of Orange County.

The Goodwill Fitness Center of Orange County, centrally located in Santa Ana, believes that every person, regardless of physical disability or health status, can benefit from a comprehensive exercise program. With approximately 70,000 people in Orange County living with physical disabilities, the center fills the gap and provides what conventional fitness centers simply cannot. Members have access to state-of-the-art specialized equipment, a range of courses designed for people with disabilities and a qualified, experienced staff. With the Fitness Center’s Stay-Fit program, members are able to enhance every day of their lives by improving stamina, muscular strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, body control and greater mobility.

Physical exercise plays an important role especially for individuals who have a physical disability or chronic illness. Training with a focus on balance, coordination, motor control and cardiovascular capacity helps the Goodwill Fitness Center members develop and maintain their ability to perform activities of daily living. This includes activities that many able-bodied people take for granted such as getting up from bed, taking a shower or bath, carrying groceries in from the car, or going up a flight of stairs. These exercise programs help members maintain and increase their independence as well as minimize the potential for chronic pain caused by muscle imbalances, muscle atrophy, overuse injuries and disability-specific wear and tear on muscles and joints. In fact, physical activity has also been proven to help reduce secondary health conditions and complications.

Thanks to the generous support of special events and organizations like Irrelevant Week, gifts of cash and pledges enable the Goodwill Fitness Center to grow its membership base, maintain the quality and level of individualized support for its members and to provide more programs to meet the specific needs of people with disabilities or chronic illness.

When you or your business becomes a sponsor of the 2010 Irrelevant Week, you are ensuring that a portion of the funds raised during this fun and exciting week will go to support one of the most dynamic and relevant causes in Orange County.
